Description

Kamalame Cay is a 96-acre private island hideaway with three miles of sugar-soft sandy beach stretching along its eastern shore just off the coast of Andros Island in The Bahamas. This barrier island is accessible only by our own private ferry or seaplane. Kamalame Cay is the perfect choice for guests who value elegance, adventure, privacy, and the romance of a unique Caribbean experience.

Kamalame Cay features gourmet Caribbean cuisine, beautiful beaches, a freshwater pool cut neatly into the Silver Palms that embrace the island, and some of the best fishing and diving found anywhere.

A handful of gracefully decorated private villas dot our island escape and face a rhythmic ocean surf that will lull you into an attitude that requires only bare feet, suntan lotion, and a cocktail, making Kamalame Cay the perfect blend of romance and adventure.

Accommodations

Kamalame Cay offers a variety of uniquely exquisite accommodations. We have complete villa suites as well as intimate cottage suites built from native stone and featuring Indonesian furniture. We incorporate inviting verandas, 20-foot wood beam ceilings, large bathrooms that include brass fixtures and oversized soaking tubs or showers with ocean views, air conditioning, rows of French doors draped with muslin curtains all with the ocean at your doorstep. Every villa or cottage suite is private and secluded yet with miles of exclusive beach that beckons the beachcomber.

All rooms include hairdryers, shampoo and amenities, plush bathrobes, insulated ice buckets, and a stereo CD system (a selection of CD's are available in your room or at our main office).

Additionally, we provide an in-room, complimentary food and beverage bar with a selection of cheese, crackers, fruit, coffee, tea, fresh milk, sodas, beer, juice and bottled water. Please contact us in advance and we will gladly supply that special something you desire. The fresh baked cookies placed in each room every afternoon continue to be a big hit.

Dining

The Great House on the Cay serves as a perfect place to rendezvous for meals, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and tales of the day's adventures. This gathering place, with its inviting wrap-around veranda, is tastefully decorated with art, antiques, and a collection of Bahamian furnishings including comfortable oversized furniture. Enjoy our Great House, built in 19th century British tradition, and relax with a glass of wine while drinking in the tranquilizing panoramic view of the Caribbean.

Meals at Kamalame are always a special event. The menu features gourmet Caribbean cuisine incorporating fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and other local delicacies. These candle-lit meals are carefully prepared and elegantly presented by Kamalame's attentive staff. After dinner, gently-aged rum, cognac and vintage port help encourage good conversation and dramatic star gazing from the beach. Breakfasts are served made-to-order with freshly squeezed juices, home-baked Bahamian bread and other delights. Lunches in the Great House will include refreshing salads, tropical fruit, delicious seafood and tempting deserts. Generous box lunches will help complete a perfect day on the water or a private picnic on the beach.

The Tiki Bar is a wonderful spot to base your beach, pool or evening activities. With its fully-stocked bar and captivating island music, you will be lured into the thatch-roofed hut and inspired to relax.

Elements permitting, we host a Tiki-torch, candle-lit Bahamian beach banquet and BBQ weekly. Our buffet is laden with delicious surf-and-turf selections accompanied by the local island twist on traditional dishes. These nights also feature a live “rake & scrape” band that plays infectious island melodies.

Adjacent to the beach and encircled with majestic Silver Coconut Palms and expansive seagrape trees, Kamalame Cay's freshwater swimming pool is perfect for a day of sunning and refreshing dips. With comfortable lounge chairs, fluffy beach towels, spectacular ocean views and beverages at hand in the adjoining Tiki Bar; days spent by the pool at Kamalame will be memorable.

Spa

The Spa at Kamalame Cay is the perfect refuge from the fast-paced, high stress world of today -- a place to concentrate on restoring and rejuvenating body, mind and soul. Our experienced Spa team will personalise a unique package of treatments to ensure you receive maximum benefit and complete relaxation from every visit.

Body Treatments

Kamalame Coconut Body Glow for Sensitive Skin - Freshly shredded young coconut (rich in nutrients) is mixed with other natural ingredients to create a gentle and effective body scrub. The finale includes an all-natural conditioning treatment that is applied after the scrub to smooth and soothe the entire body.

Coffee Body Scrub - Using freshly ground premium beans, this coffee body scrub will smooth, polish and refine your skin while it refreshes and elevates your mood. After exfoliating, a natural moisturising mixture is applied.

Sea Salt Body Glow - Massage away dry skin with exotic oils and mineral-rich treasures from the sea. This all-natural, deep cleansing and exfoliation treatment is followed by an intense moisturising therapy that includes a yogurt splash to moisturise and restore the skin's natural pH. Hibiscus floral toner completes this refreshing full-body service.

Seaweed Botanical Wrap - This tropical treatment uses our own synergistic blend of pure minerals and sea extracts designed to nourish, soften and tone the skin. After a gentle sea salt exfoliation, these detoxifying agents are applied to aid in purifying the body as well as the soul. A deep moisturising massage follows.

Ultimate Skin Nourisher - The West African Shea (Karite) tree produces a prized nut from which deeply moisturising shea butter is derived. After a gentle skin exfoliation with our own special sea salt scrub, a melted shea butter massage will leave your skin soft and supple.

After Sun Replenish and Hydrate - This massage and aromatherapy treatment uses lavender and other skin healing oils to replenish and revitalise dry and sun-impacted skin.

Cool-As-A-Cucumber Wrap for Sunburned Skin - If you happen to over do it in the sun, consider this skin pampering treatment. The heat will seep from your sunburned body as this cool cucumber and essential oil wrap is applied. A deep full body moisturising treatment and relaxing scalp massage complete the service.

Massage

Tropical Massage - Similar to the traditional Swedish massage with deep, relaxing strokes, this indulgent treatment is perfect for tired, stressed bodies. A special Kamalame-blend of tropical oils is used to hydrate and nourish the skin.

Aromatherapy Massage - Personalised massage therapy treatment using precious essential oils to promote health and well-being.

Sports Massage - This is an individually tailored deep-core muscle massage addressing trigger points to treat the stress, tension and fatigue that occurs through occupational, recreational or sporting activities.

Fisherman's Friend Massage - After a long day on the bonefish flats or after pulling in that feisty tuna from the Tongue of the Ocean, this rejuvenating neck, shoulder and arm treatment will promote relaxation and get you ready to cast again tomorrow.

Relaxation Scalp and Facial Massage - Add this calming, therapeutic treatment to any other service to make yourself complete.

Nail Care

Spa Manicure - This luxurious and therapeutic service treats and pampers from the finger nails to the top of the arms. Includes a relaxing soak, cuticle shaping, nail reshape, therapeutic hand masque and exfoliating scrub followed by a deep moisturising hand and arm massage. A nail nourisher and polish application completes the service.

Spa Pedicure - This pedicure concentrates on the feet and lower legs and includes a soak, cuticle shaping, nail reshape, callous and heel treatment, foot and leg masque, scrub, moisturising massage and final nail polish to help make your feet look great and feel happy.

Activities

Snorkeling is an activity guests of all ages can safely enjoy at Kamalame. There are many dramatic sites just off our beach and many more that can be easily accessed by boat on the nearby reef. Andros Island's barrier reef is alive with an incredible diversity of beautiful fish and colorful coral.
Just minutes away, Staniard Rock has the uniquely spectacular circle of coral; it is easily some of the most remarkable snorkeling in the Bahamas. At low tide a garden of Elkhorn coral is exposed. Beautiful breakers crash over the reef, yet there is ample room behind the waves to explore the maze of coral heads. Be sure to keep your eyes open for turtles, nurse sharks, spotted eagle rays, and colorful tropical fish.

Exploring the Rat Cay Blue Hole is not to be missed. This trip can be coordinated with a relaxing picnic lunch at Saddleback Cay.

Andros Island is the largest yet one of the least known of the 700 islands in the Bahamas archipelago. From a diverse collection of tropical plants and birds to unusual geology, Andros offers an abundance of options for the nature lover. Explore the ecology on a variety of nature trails or spend a day visiting sights such as Morgan's Bluff, the highest point on the island. Seek treasure in a cave or ponder the days of slavery while among the ruins of slave homes.

Explore sites that few people ever see. Maidenhair Coppice and Rainbow Blue Hole are just two highlighted on this trip. See stunning "banana holes," gaze at a fascinating lagoon with its massive orchids, or relax in a remote freshwater hole. Make it a full day and include Jungle Pond where you'll need to keep an eye and ear out for hogs, Great Lizard Cuckoos, and be amazed by the pond itself.

Go back in time at Red Bays and watch the best basket makers on Andros ply their craft. Search out sponges, investigate the Bahamian craftsman's woodcarvings, or visit Money Point for an invertebrate search where millions of creatures roam the tidal flat.

You may want to consider paddling one of our sea-kayaks through the gentle inland creeks that meet the sea at Kamalame's doorstep or test the ocean on our nearby shores. Quietly glide by shore birds, spot bonefish and experience the sea life that inhabits our shallow waters.

Kamalame has a regulation tennis court that overlooks the ocean, so bring your own racket or borrow one of ours to get some exercise and keep your swing in tune.

Kamalame offers romantic dinners for two on the beach with your own personal chef as well as private picnics on deserted cays. Experience a couple's massage on the beach, or enjoy a private seaplane day trip to a far-flung destination.

We can arrange a private candlelit dinner for two, anywhere on our three miles of starlit beach. You'll be seated at a flower decked table, ringed with flaming Tikki torches while your personal chef prepares your evening dinner and generously pours champagne -- a perfect setting for that special romantic celebration.

Consider being dropped off at an offshore deserted island with your special someone, picnic basket in hand, on a totally uninhabited beach for as many hours as you desire.

Experience the adventure of a seaplane day trip -- let Safari Seaplanes collect you at the Cay in the morning for a flyout over Andros. Fly to one of the more remote spots on Andros where no car can drive, land on an interior lake and have a drink, or fly to Nassau to enjoy a day of dining and shopping or try your luck at a casino.

The ocean waters just minutes from Kamalame's dock offer some of the most productive fishing in The Bahamas. Climb aboard one of our guided flats boats to chase the elusive Bahamas bonefish through the shallow waters and flats that surround Kamalame, or try your luck on one of our deep sea boats and fish the world's third longest barrier reef for tuna, dolphin (mahi mahi), wahoo, barracuda, and shark.

Scuba

The third longest barrier reef in the world is just a mile from Kamalame's shores offering divers and snorkelers the perfect opportunity to enjoy the warm Caribbean waters while experiencing an exceptional underwater adventure.

This lush, living barrier reef harbors many wonders from gently swaying sea anemones tucked in brilliant coral to tiny seahorses that gracefully ride the current. Watch rainbow-colored parrotfish, animated pufferfish and majestic shark's parade right before your eyes. Explore the bustling shallows, follow huge grouper through coral caverns, watch spotted eagle rays glide over the deep blue, or just drift along the edge of the dramatic wall that plunges 6,000 feet to the bottom of the “Tongue of the Ocean.” Blue Hole dives are also available upon request and all experience levels catered for.

Our new fully-staffed PADI/TDI center situated on the Marina dock offers effortless diving. Let our experienced and friendly instructors guide you around the 30+ beautiful dive sites close by. All levels of PADI certification including resort courses are offered. Experienced divers will revel in the 100-foot visibility and amazingly diverse marine life.

Weddings

We have been privileged to celebrate several weddings and honeymoons here at Kamalame. Let the romance of the Caribbean be the backdrop to this most memorable occasion. Our friendly and accommodating staff will be pleased to help you arrange the ceremony, your party's accommodation needs, and any personal touch you desire to make this special event complete. Our gourmet chef will help you create a personalized menu for you and your guests. We welcome the opportunity to host your special day, and we'll even decorate your wedding golf cart.

Experience the relaxed island elegance and absolute romance of Kamalame and her beaches, as you celebrate your honeymoon and begin a new life together. We can arrange quiet dinners in our private dining room, a picnic on a nearby cay, or a table for two right on the beach where a staff will attend to your every need. As our guests, we welcome you to take advantage of our facilities and activities where perhaps a day of diving, tennis, or touring will help complete your Caribbean adventure. Spend lazy mornings in your extraordinary beachside villa, sun at the pool or on the beach, or take a romantic walk on our private island's three-miles of sugar soft beach. Make your special event unforgettable by joining us in the Bahamas at Kamalame Cay.

Fishing

Bonefishing

Andros Island is home to world-class bonefishing and Kamalame is fortunate to be able to offer two distinct fisheries. There is abundant water with excellent bonefishing right on the backside of the Cay as well as in the nearby creeks and flats stretching all the way to Majestic Point. We also offer access to the Joulter Cays with their seemingly endless wadeable flats and large schools of tailing bonefish. The Joulters lie at the north end of Andros (a short drive from Kamalame).

Andros is renowned for having the largest bonefish in the Bahamas. Fish averaging a solid 4 pounds to many in the 9-plus pound class are encountered while even larger bones work the edges of the flats. There is an honest opportunity to see and (hopefully!) catch bonefish weighing in the double digit category -- a thrill for any fisherman.

Seasoned guides using Maverick flats skiffs with poling platforms will meet anglers each day either at the Cay to fish the local waters or at the north end of Andros to fish The Joulters. Full or half-day guided trips are available (full-day only for The Joulters). Both experienced and novice fishermen are encouraged to enjoy our expansive flats and the challenge of stalking the elusive bonefish.

If you favor a more relaxed pace or if you just can't stop fishing at the end of the day, wander on your own and wade Davis Creek's sweeping flat just a short distance from the backdoor of your villa.

Deep Sea Fishing

Reef and light tackle offshore fishing is available at Kamalame Cay in one of the lodges' 24-ft Pathfinder center console V-hull boats powered by 200hp Yamaha motors. Seasonally, anglers can expect to target dorado, wahoo, king mackerel, tuna and grouper all within sight of the lodge. The guides and captains at Kamalame are well versed in both fly and conventional tackle.
