The Bermuda Biodiversity Project, including the Bermuda Turtle Project, is the umbrella under which research is conducted at BAMZ. Education and research programs are funded by two non-profit organization, the Bermuda Zoological Society and the US.501(c)(3) Friends of the Bermuda Aquarium.
Mangrove Walk, South Shore Beaches and Parks
Explore the mangroves, South Shore beaches and parks with Bermuda Zoological Society Field Guides. Please note the trail is through rough and uneven terrain, must be physically fit.
Whale Watch Boat Trips
Humpback whales traditionally pass Bermuda in late March and April as they migrate north, and, although there are no guarantees of spotting them, enjoy a 'whale watch' boat trip designed to see the whales cavort.
Snorkeling at North Rock
The Bermuda Islands were born as the Earth's tectonic plates separated about 200 million years ago. Hot magma erupted from the mantle to the sea floor and several groups of volcanoes were born. One of these groups was to become the Bermuda chain. Only the Southern side of the crater is still above water level, and that is the part that makes up the Bermuda Islands. On the Northern side, about 10 miles from St George's, stands a solitary outcrop of rocks, marked by a beacon. This outcrop is called North Rock.
The spectacular reef community at North Rock consists largely of the brain coral, great star coral and mustard hill coral. The tops of the reefs lie three to four meters from the surface, separated by sand channels of eight to ten meters. Summer only.
Nonsuch Island Tours
Nonsuch is a 15-acre island nature reserve recreated as a living museum of the natural habitats, flora and fauna found in Bermuda in the early 1600s. Dr. David Wingate rediscovered the endemic Cahow bird in 1951, thought extinct for over 300 years, and established this island as a safe breeding ground. Numbers are restricted to this precious reserve and this is a once in a lifetime experience. Trips are on Thursdays, weather permitting and organized by the Bermuda Biological Station for Research. Box lunches are included in the fee.
Sports fishing
The best of sports fishing is available with great fishing companies.
Sailing
A variety of charter boats and cruises are available from the Fairmont Hamilton Princess dock (on request).
Parasailing
See the island by sitting on a harness or the Skyrider seat of a parasail!
Beaches
You probably wonder why Bermuda's beaches are pink. Are they blushing? With all the couples who come here on a romantic getaway, just maybe. In reality, the ephemeral hue you see is a result of shell particles, calcium carbonate and bits of crushed coral mixed with sand.
Golf
Bermuda is a golfer's paradise with more golf courses per square mile than any other country in the world. Lush Bermuda grass fairways, seaside rough, turquoise waters, colorful flowering trees, quaint white roofed cottages and vistas that will take your breath away.
Golf in Bermuda is a year round pleasure. So when the courses elsewhere are hidden by snow, Bermuda's winter climate makes our greens the greenest and our fairways the fairest.
The Fairmont Southampton Golf Course
An island gem designed to take your short game to new heights, The Fairmont Southampton Golf Course features 18 challenging par three holes. Taking advantage of the beautiful surroundings and dramatic elevation changes, this 2,684-yard course forces prudent club selection, with wind a definite factor.
Whether tournament play or just a friendly game takes you out on the course, you'll be delighted with the myriad of bunkers, two water hazards and three tee offerings.
Ocean View Golf Course
Located in the verdant center of the Island in Devonshire Parish, Ocean View is owned and maintained by the Government of Bermuda. On this fully matured 9-hole course, one enjoys splendid vistas of the Atlantic from several of the elevated tees. At 2,940 yards, it may seem tame enough... but guess again. Its unpredictable terrain and rambling hills remain, as you will soon discover, doggedly resistant to low scoring.
Mid Ocean Golf Club
Once you experience Mid Ocean, you'll have no argument with experts who rank it among the top links of the world. Cathedral-like in its awesome beauty, Mid Ocean administers the classic test: good shots are rewarded; bad shots are penalized. True to form Mid Ocean's 6,512 yards heighten the long game - six par 4s exceed 400 yards; there's even a 238 yard par-3. Nonetheless, a card full of double and triple bogeys pales in comparison to the superb views of the mighty Atlantic. But win or lose, the lasting thrill is to say: ''I played Mid Ocean''.
Belmont Hills Golf Club
Having been redesigned under the direction of Californian Algie Pulley, Belmont Hills Golf Club is more magnificent than ever. Set in a lush garden estate with commanding views over the Great Sound, Belmont Hills Golf Club offers 6,000 yards of demanding golf in an attractive setting.
St. Georges Golf Course
This, the newest of Bermuda's Government golf courses, was designed by Robert Trent Jones and is a par-62, 4,043-yard course. Located at the eastern tip of the island within walking distance of the old Town of St. George, the links range along hillsides with imposing views of the Atlantic. Wind velocity will be an important factor in your game. On a couple of the par-3s, for instance, you could need anything from a nine-iron to a driver to reach the green. To conquer this course you'll need concentration, proper club selection, and very careful shot execution.
Tucker's Point Golf Club
Tucker's Point Club's new 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Roger Rulewich, former senior designer for Robert Trent Jones, builds upon the striking beauty of the former Castle Harbor golf course. An enchanting opening hole overlooks Castle Harbor and the Atlantic beyond. The course is challenging and features newly designed holes and greens, contoured fairways and bunkers and a new practice facility and driving range.
Riddell's Bay Golf and Country Club
The elder statesman of Bermuda country clubs, Riddells Bay has enticed golfers the world over since 1922 and is now available exclusively for Fairmont guests. Winding along a peninsula measuring only 600 yards at its widest, these lovely links provide a magnificent challenge to one's golf game and camera. The course measures relatively short 5,800 yards. With its tight fairways and small narrow greens, accuracy is the name of the game. Additional pleasure (or perhaps vexation, depending on your performance) is gained by the proximity of some holes to the ocean.
Local Area
Fondly referred to by Bermudians as ''The Pink Palace,'' The Fairmont Hamilton Princess opened its doors on January 1, 1885. Bermuda had gained international recognition two years earlier in 1883 when Princess Louise, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria, visited for a winter retreat and called it ''a place of eternal spring.''
Harley Trott, a leading businessman at the time and head of Trott & Cox, the steamship agents and purveyors of meat for the British military, was determined to build a hotel that would attract affluent Americans, who would summer in the Berkshires and winter in Bermuda. Other seaside resorts were being built and a ''posh'' hotel would likely compete with other destinations like Palm Beach.
When the hotel opened, it was named ''The Princess'' in honor of the royal visit some years earlier. Incidentally, The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies was also named for Princess Louise. For many years, because the hotels were operating seasonally, summer employees from The Fairmont Banff Springs and The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise would work at The Fairmont Hamilton Princess during the winter months.
From the moment it opened, The Fairmont Hamilton Princess was considered the gem of the island. With long shady verandas and a blue slate roof, the four-story building comprised 70 rooms, each equipped with gas lights, hot and cold running water and a five-inch mirror to allow guests to primp before stepping out for the night.
Thomas Cook Tours started to offer package tours out of New York to The Fairmont Hamilton Princess. Staff dressed in white jackets and waving pink handkerchiefs greeted luxury liners. As word got out, celebrities started to appear. Mark Twain, a regular at the hotel, loved to smoke cigars on the veranda while he signed autographs and recited poetry to adoring fans. One wartime ''guest'' at the hotel was said to have used its fish tank-lined Gazebo Bar as a motif in his novel. The famous guest was novelist Ian Fleming and the book, Dr. No.
In 1939, when the world went to war, The Fairmont Hamilton Princess was under British Censorship and home to Allied servicemen. The basement became an intelligence center and way station where all mail, radio and telegraphic traffic bound for Europe, the U.S. and the Far East were intercepted and analyzed by 1,200 censors, before being routed to their destination. Rumor has it that it was nicknamed ''Bletchley-in-the-Tropics'' after the English country house where the ''Enigma'' code was broken.
The years brought changes and in 1959, American tanker billionaire Daniel Ludwig purchased the hotel. As part of the deal to build a new luxury hotel - The Fairmont Southampton on the south shore - The Fairmont Hamilton Princess was renovated: a new wing built and lounges added.
With over a century of experience, The Fairmont Hamilton Princess is sister to properties such as The Plaza in New York, The Fairmont Banff Springs in Alberta, and The Fairmont San Francisco. She has famous and illustrious siblings, yet she remains the Grande Dame and oldest member of the Fairmont Hotels & Resorts family.
