The rudest, worst service I have experienced - and they knew it was our honeymoon.

We planned to split our honeymoon between Waimea Plantation Cottages and Hanalei Bay Resort. The cottages were terrific for us - vintage furniture, remote part of the island with small towns. When we drove up to Hanalei Bay after 4 days in the south of the island, it seemed like another world - very lush and green.
Unfortunately, the hotel was a nightmare. When we checked in, they gave us a room that hadn't been cleaned for a long time - bugs in the towels, dirty bathroom. There were two huge air conditioners on the patio outside the room and they were LOUD. We went back to the desk and asked for another room and were shocked that they would give what seemed like their worst room, completely unacceptable and not even properly cleaned to a honeymoon couple. After I cried at the front desk about the room and the treatment, they said there was another room we could look at - the one next door to the first.
We went to that room and it was much nicer - obviously redecorated and clean without the loud air conditioners. We left our luggage and walked down to Hanalei Bay, which was beautiful. Then we came back to the room and as I started to change for dinner, I noticed the carpet in the room was wet. Then we noticed the mosquitoes. Tons of them. Maybe they just cleaned the carpets, but why were they still so wet? And where were the mosquitoes coming from? I called the front desk again and told them the problem. They said they didn't have any other rooms.
I asked them to find us another place to stay, since they didn't actually have an acceptable room available for us. They said that since we booked a package through the Big Day, the first night was already paid for and if we didn't like the rooms they showed us, that was our problem. We could talk to the Big Day to get a refund, but they weren't going to give us one or help us find another place to stay.
We ended up looking in the phone book to find another hotel with a room available on Saturday night with no notice; not the easiest thing to do in Kauai in June. We found a totally kitschy place, but at least it was clean and mosquito free and we could hear each other talk in the room.
The Big Day found us a new place to stay the next day, but we had to pay the difference in hotel rooms and they left it up to us to deal with trying to get a refund when we got back. We didn't bother; I just wanted to forget that part of the honeymoon.
So if you are paying top dollar for a beach room, maybe Hanalei Bay Resort will work for you, but they treated us terribly, made me cry with their rudeness, and took $220 from us for the experience. I will definitely go back to Kauai and to Waimea Plantation Cottages, but NEVER to Hanalei Bay Resort.
