Description

The resort is spread over 12 richly landscaped acres and surrounded by dense tropical rainforest. We have planted hundreds of plants and trees that are not only lovely to see but also attract a variety of birds and wildlife.

Scarlet Macaws soar overhead, nesting nearby. Toucans can be heard calling from deep in the rainforest. Hummingbirds feed on the brilliant heliconia. White faced monkeys lunch on ripe mangoes. The sounds of the jungle surround you.

Most people only dream of visiting a tropical paradise. At La Paloma Lodge it's right outside your doorstep. The locals have enjoyed these beaches quietly for years; you'll find no trace of McDonald's here. An evening at La Paloma is a great time to catch the sunset with sand between your toes.

The option to walk along miles of pristine beaches, untouched by corporate life and civilization is not widely available – unless you're lucky enough to have found Drake Bay. The locals have enjoyed these beaches quietly for years; you'll find no trace of McDonald's here. An evening at La Paloma is a great time to catch the sunset with sand between your toes.

At La Paloma a world of intense biodiversity is right at your doorstep. The option to explore Paloma's twelve acres and our side of the Osa Peninsula is a tour in itself. A resident biologist was kind enough to create Mr. Wizard's Self-Guided Tour which will point out highlights and attractions as you wind your way across the property. Hundreds of bird species, including the scarlet macaw, toucan, and tanager, as well as insects, and reptiles call La Paloma home.

After a day of adventure, our secluded and beautifully tiled pool and deck provide a quiet place to relax, not to mention the best sea view this side of the Pacific; so kick back to watch the sun as it drips into the Pacific beside Cano Island and let the exotic and tropical atmosphere of Paloma erase the stress of the outside world.

Accommodations

All of the rooms and ranchos at La Paloma are furnished with queen and single orthopedic beds, hot water showers provided by solar heaters, and ceiling fans.

Each also boasts an artistically tiled private bath, expansive balconies with hammocks, varnished hardwood floors and a breathtaking view of the Pacific.

The Lodge faces west, the perfect direction to catch a magnificent sunset over Caño Island.

Activities

Sea Kayaking Rio Agujitas and Drake Bay is a great way to spend the afternoon. La Paloma provides single or double sea kayaks for anyone interested in exploring the Agujitas River and surrounding Drake Bay. At full tide a paddle up river, under a rustic swinging bridge, is sure to enrapture as the civilized world washes away. The only sounds you will hear are your kayak sluicing through water and the pulse of the jungle. In this intense solitude all manner of jungle life will introduce themselves to you. Peaceful Drake Bay is also a great place for fun in the sun. Kayak along the coast or surf in Drake Bay’s gentle waves.

Horseback Riding tours are not for the equestrian alone. Anyone with an interest in exploring primary rain forest outside of Corcovado can tour the area with a local guide and his string of native horses. This is a great way to get in touch with the Drake Bay lifestyle.

The Bug Lady’s Night Hike Want a great nightcap? Try nature’s special blend: lots of spineless wonders, a splash of mammals, and a mellowing shot of jungle ambiance in a tall rainforest tumbler, and you’ve got the basic ingredients for a perfect ending to your delicious stay in Drake Bay. This two and a half hour night tour takes place after dinner (usually from 7:30 to 10) behind the Lodge in the primary forest along the Agujitas River. The Bug Lady, Tracy Stice, offers night vision optics and rubber boots. Expect to see colonies of leaf cutter ants, spiders, and adorned moths. The natural history of these critters is fascinating, especially with the human element of why we fear these harmless bugs. Conquer fear with information.

Awards

Chosen one of the seven best eco-lodges in Costa Rica by FROMMER'S COSTA RICA.

"Spending a night listening to the rain beating down on the thatch is very romantic and these ranchos are my favorite rooms in Drake." "They are justly proud of their 36 foot catamaran boat that makes a fast trip to Isla del Caño and is currently the most spacious and comfortable dive boat at Drake."
LONELY PLANET
