Description
Located just off the main road between Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park, Makanda By the Sea's unique contemporary design blends elegant architecture with its striking green backdrop in one of Costa Rica's richest natural settings.
Accommodations
Makanda By the Sea's open-air design was specially crafted to enhance the cooling effects of refreshing Pacific breezes.
Spectacular hardwoods, vaulted ceilings and hand-crafted tiles are just a few of the added overtones of elegance that distinguishes Makanda By the Sea as no ordinary vacation getaway.
Dining
Enjoy any one of a number of fine international restaurants in either Quepos or Manuel Antonio. Finally, top off the perfect day with a visit to the popular casino or one of the local discotheques.
The restaurant, Sunspot, uses only the finest seafood, meats, poultry and vegetables. Most items are prepared on the grill and all dishes are accented with fresh herbs and spices from La Botanica. You can spend the day at the pool taking advantage of their drink specials and treating yourself to Bocas and Entrees.
Enjoy the chef's daily special under a beautiful sunset followed by dessert and a cup of locally fresh roasted coffee from Café Milagro or tropical drinks in the Jacuzzi.
Activities
Catch a different glimpse of the rainforest while exploring the backcountry waters of the Savegre and Naranjo rivers by river raft or kayak.
Schools of dolphin, giant sea turtles and the occasional manta ray will act as guides while you seek the sailfish and marlin that have made this a world-class fishing destination.
For many of visitors, horseback riding on rainforest trails or sunset beaches is an unforgettable part of their Costa Rican experience. World-renowned for its beautiful beaches and wildlife, Manuel Antonio National Park showcases the area's natural abundance through its professionally-guided tours and well-tended trails. Makanda's own secluded beaches as well as those of Manuel Antonio are great for surfing sunning and sea kayaking. Then test your fins while snorkeling or scuba diving off the volcanic reefs of nearby islands.

Makanda was a highlight of our trip - when you want a place that is QUIET and beautiful, this really fits the bill. Our room was small but gorgeous - with doors that opened to a balcony overlooking the forest and ocean beyond. Felt like you were the only ones there. The breakfasts brought your room are delicious and romantic - you can sit on the balcony and eat them while listening to and sometimes seeing! nothing but birds and often monkeys! If you want to venture out to Manuel Antonio, or other nearby activities, they or The Big Day can help you arrange them - vans pick you up at the resort's gates. This place is not where you want to go if you want to be doing resort-y activities all the time - its a quiet oasis, small and peaceful. there is a private beach, which is a long steep walk down stairs through the jungle - we went once, but its not really where we wanted to hang out! We stayed for about 4 days, which was the perfect counterpart to our previous activity-filled 3 days near Arenal Volcano. You are not COMPLETELY in the middle of nowhere though - there were signs around, warning you to lock your room when you were gone - they have had thefts, like almost any resort i would imagine - but we had no problems at all!
