Description
The five-star Camino Real Oaxaca is unique in all of México. Housed in the former convent of Santa Catalina and built in 1576, it is a grand colonial property, meticulously restored to retain its former grace. Spanish Baroque architecture and authentic colonial touches will take you back to earlier times in Oaxaca.
Walk down the long tiled corridors with their fading original frescoes and you can hear the faint sound of Gregorian chant in the air as you discover several sun-splashed courtyards and flower filled patios and gardens.
Explore courtyards and walkways bursting with bougainvillea; archways with the warm morning sun glistening through them; gardens with fountains that quietly trickle - echoing the bird song you'll hear throughout the hotel. The setting is peaceful, relaxed and exudes a natural tranquillity and elegance.
The rooms are generally large with high beamed ceilings, stucco walls, queen or double beds, cable TV, air-conditioning and fans, telephones and large modern bathrooms with walls of beautiful Mexican tiles. All rooms are tastefully decorated with native weavings and Oaxacan crafts.
Accommodations
All of the rooms in the hotel are decorated in a tasteful, colonial style and feature traditional high ceilings. Like the rest of the building, wooden beams support exposed terracotta ceiling tiles. The original floor tiles have been retained and restored where possible; each room offers air conditioning and fans, as well as the modern facilities you would expect from a hotel of this quality. Everything is carefully interwoven and integrated so as not to spoil the original colonial style.

Activities
Oaxaca's Historic Center extends six to eight blocks in each direction from the Zócalo. Oaxaca has virtually numberless attractions branching out from the main square. A Walk in the Clouds: mountain hiking in Oaxaca. The Sierra Norte or Sierra de Juarez is set in a uniquely privileged location; seven of the nine types of vegetation existing in Mexico are found here in nearly four thousand plant species. The Skinny of Temazcal: the traditonal Mexican steam bath. It's a part of the movement, now so widespread in this country, to return to the healing practices preserved in indigenous medicine. Oaxaca's Botanical Garden: in order to demonstrate the relationship between the vegetation and the traditions of Oaxaca, the garden only brings together plants that are relevant to the region’s culture. Village markets: major towns all have weekly markets or “Tianguis”, with days staggered to enable vendors and purchasers to attend different ones. Oaxaca Crafts: No trip to Oaxaca is complete without some time spent exploring a few of the region’s fascinating villages, and wandering through several of the area’s exotic native markets.

Local Area
This four centuries old ex-convent of Santa Catalina (declared an historic monument by UNESCO) is located conveniently about 4 blocks from the main square (the zocalo) and is close to shopping, dining, museums and galleries.
Some guests find the rooms on the second floor to be more pleasant. Others prefer the ground floor: to walk out of their room into one of the many garden courtyards. One of the larger patios, with the beautifully carved, stone basin in the center, is called Los Lavaderos (the laundry); it’s where the Dominican sisters of the convent used to wash clothes by hand using water from the city's aqueduct.
The old convent of Santa Catalina has adapted to its role as a hotel, without sacrificing its original style and grace. A romantic feeling still lingers in the charming courtyards and small enclosed patios. This is definitely for those who want to bathe in the ambiance of ‘luxurious authenticity’. The addition of a beautiful courtyard-enclosed swimming pool, breakfast buffet in the garden and the weekly Guelaguetza dinner-show celebration all add up to a magnificent blending of old and new; the pairing of simplicity and elegance.
The attention to detail is inspiring and a stay at the Camino Real in Oaxaca perfectly complements the first-class colonial experience of the city itself.
Represented by the Oaxaca Hotel Group and managed by Camino Real Hotels, it remains under the auspices of the National Institute of History and Anthropology (INAH) and is designated a national treasure.
