noumea lookout Getting to New Caledonia

Most travelers arrive in New Caledonia via the Tontouta International Airport, although yachtties can find a safe harbor in the capital as well.

From North America, honeymooners can catch a flight from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Nadi, Fiji (NAN) on Air Pacific. Travelers can stay in Fiji for a few days before continuing on or grab the two-hour flight on Air Calin to Noumea (NOU).

Passengers who leave LAX at 11:30 p.m. arrive in Noumea around 10 a.m. local time. Due to the dateline crossing, travelers 'lose' a day on the flight and arrive two days after their departure. However, you always make it up upon your return! Air Pacific and Air Calin are codeshare partners with American Airlines.

Departures from other countries, including Tahiti, abound, and Air Calin also offers partnerships with many of them.

Tontouta International Airport is located approximately 30 miles (50 km) outside of the capital. The airport is modern and clean, with efficient customs and immigration procedures.

Taxicabs are plentiful outside of Tontouta International Airport. Fares are not set, however, you can expect to pay approximately $80 USD for a one-way trip into the city center. Tipping is not expected but is welcomed. An ATM is located outside of the arrivals terminal for easy access to local currency.

Travelers can also choose to travel via shuttle bus to their choice of hotel. Transfers cost 3000 XPF per person, or approximately $36/pp.

Traveling Around New Caledonia

Visitors typically start their New Caledonia vacation in the capital, Noumea. Not surprisingly, this is the biggest and busiest city, with the best connections to areas around the country.

The preferred way to explore Grande Terre – and, if you travel to the Isle of Pines – is by hiring a car. Roads throughout the country are well-paved and lit and local drivers must undergo training and a test before acquiring a driver's license. Overseas drivers are required to show a valid license from their home country before hiring a car in New Caledonia.

A stunningly beautiful destination, either to stay overnight or as a day-trip from Noumea, is the Isle of Pines. It can be reached by flight, ferry or helicopter. For more information on traveling to the Ile des Pins, read our article on the Isle of Pines
