Description

At the Club Bali Hai Moorea on Cook's Bay you'll find the authentic Tahitian experience in an intimate, family-run atmosphere. From the front desk to the restaurant, from the housekeepers to the tour guides, from the manager Rose to their patriarchs, Muk and Jay, you'll fall in love with the warmth and personality of the Club Bali Hai.

The resort is located in the heart of Cook's Bay. Wisps of clouds flow down from the peaks of the volcanic mountains as the sun lights up the pineapple plantations and the stunning foliage around Cook's Bay. Moua Roa (aka Mt. Bali Hai) thrusts up in the distance. Swimming and kayaking are perfect here - you can step into the warm, tropical water from the sandy beach or from the deck of your overwater bungalow.

Accommodations

The accommodations at the Club Bali Hai Hotel are wonderfully tropical and authentically Tahitian. No matter which of our accomodations you choose, you'll find it's the uniqueness and charm that makes the Club Bali Hai Hotel a paradise unrivaled anywhere on the island.

The hotel was built by Tahitians in the quintessential Polynesian style. Rooms feature spacious patios and decks, showers that incorporate native plants and tropical breezes, native rattan furniture and huge windows that provide an indescribably amazing view of Cook's Bay against a backdrop of Moorea's majestic mountains.

Overwater Bungalows

Each of the overwater bungalows was built with careful attention to authentic Tahitian details. From the private decks with gorgeous tropical fish swimming to and fro to the low hum of the ceiling fans, from the showers lined with thriving native plants to the cool tiled floors, from the colorful linens to the fragrant Tiare soaps by the sink, this is paradise. The bungalows are spacious, colorfully decorated, and perfect for cozy breakfasts and romantic dinners created in your kitchenette, complete with dishes, refrigerator, stove, coffeemaker and the works. Imagine waking up every day with the gentle sounds of the water all around you, the sunlight pouring through the windows on every side...and every so often the bloop-plop of a reef fish surfacing for a quick snack!

Beachfront Bungalows

Like the overwater bungalows, the one-bedroom beachfront units are spectacular. Plants and fresh flowers are plentiful both in and around your large, light-filled bungalow, the kitchenette is well-stocked and convenient, the beds and linens are crisp and colorful and, best of all, your own white sand beach awaits you just steps outside your front door.

You can relax in the privacy of your own little slice of heaven, whether on the beach, on your patio, in the warm Pacific waters or, if you're really ambitious, by the swimming pool a couple of dozen yards away. Some of the beachfront bungalows even have sleeping arrangements for families so go ahead, bring the kids! Your beachfront bungalow will be the homebase for a trip your family will remember and treasure for ages.

Each one-bedroom beachfront bungalow has one queen bed in the bedroom and one single bed in the living room with a folding door in betwen for privacy. Bungalows also feature a kitchenette, dining area, air-conditioning and a private bath with a gorgeous tropical shower. Daily maid service is provided.

Bayview Rooms

When you stay in one of the bayview rooms, you can make yourself a cup of coffee in the morning in your own kitchenette, then step outside onto your terrace and take it all in while you plan your busy day. You are already in the midst of the colorful and fragrant tropical garden and mere steps away from The Blue Pineapple, the white sand beaches and the bay beyond as well as the lovely pool (in fact, you can probably hear the pool's waterfall from where you're standing!).

Each bayview room has one queen bed and one single bed, a kitchenette, air-conditioning and a private bathroom which includes a shower. Daily maid service is provided.

Gardenview Rooms

The charming garden rooms, set amidst the palm trees and vibrant, fragrant flowers of the well-maintained grounds, will make your stay in Moorea something very special. Long, lazy days on your own deck looking out over the gardens, the stunning azure blue of Cook's Bay and the mountains that surround it would be enough, but the proximity to the pool, the Blue Pineapple, the white sand beach and the rich snorkeling opportunities are pretty nice, too.

Each garden room has one queen bed and one single bed, air-conditioning and a private bathroom which includes a shower. Daily maid service is provided.

Dining

Located on the grounds of The Club Bali Hai - right on the water - The Blue Pineapple is a very popular restaurant for both hotel guests and other visitors to our island. The reasons are tres simple: they serve the best food at the best prices on the island.

Alternatively, there are several wonderful local restaurants that are either close enough to walk or that provide free car pickup service from the hotel. These restaurants cover all price ranges and vary from casual to "island dress-up" (meaning you can wear your new black pearls with a fancy sarong and feel right at home!). There's even a pizza place that will deliver an extraordinary pizza, a fresh salad and a chocolate mousse to die for.

The Blue Pineapple

The menu choices are varied but the quality is not: soft, fluffy pancakes; eggs exactly as you like them; thin, flavorful crepes; fresh French bread with butter and jam; warm croissants and pastries...even special Tahitian doughnuts on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. When you've eaten your fill, make sure to drop a few chunks of your bread in the water beside your table and watch the gorgeous reef fish swim by for a snack!

Lunch, too, is a wonderful affair...the warm breeze off the lagoon bathes you while you enjoy a cold Hinano beer or a glass of wine with a delicious salad, a juicy steak with pomme frites, a big, yummy hamburger or even the local specialty, poisson-cru, which consists of fresh tuna marinated in lime juice, mixed with fresh vegetables and topped off with coconut milk.

Alfredo's

Just a stone's throw from the Club, Alfredo's has a warm, lively atmosphere and an incredibly friendly vibe.

This restaurant has been a favorite of Club Bali Hai guests for many years--from the Mai Tais to the pasta, from the fresh fish to the salads, from the live music on Thursday and Sunday nights to the extraordinary full bar, Alfredo's will be your home away from home while you're in Moorea.

Te Honu Iti

Just five minutes from the Club Bali Hai, Chef Roger's Te Honu Iti is its own slice of paradise. Your table on the spacious terrace overlooking Cook's Bay will be the setting of one of the most elegant and delicious meals you'll find on Moorea...even as the lights below illuminate the vibrant fish and impressive rays swimming by hoping for a taste of freshly baked bread.

Te Honu Iti's first class menu offers both the fantastic French fare you'll come to expect on the island as well as a few surprises. You'll find a selection of wine here you won't find anywhere else on the island and an excellent, fully stocked bar.

Les Nouveaux Mondes

Les Nouveaux Mondes is a gorgeous restaurant and, at just two minutes away, it's a place you will want to return more than once during your stay.
Specialties that range from classic French to local seafood. (To die for: the shrimp in puffed pastry with fresh vegetables!) The food is beautifully presented, the wine list has something for everyone and the desserts are truly worth saving room for!

Le Cocotier

Quaint and charming, Le Cocotier is a small, delightful restaurant set in a beautiful Tahitian garden. When you arrive, two lovely Tahitian girls greet you, then seat you within the quiet serenity of this hidden gem. The wine list is impressive and the menu exquisite. A delicious appetizer of Assiette Polynesian will get you in the right mindset for what is to follow: delicate portions of poisson cru, sashimi, tuna carpaccio or their wonderful specialty, Mahi Mahi with Almonds. Their desserts will send you home with a smile that won't soon fade away, as well...we particularly recommend the French Apple Pastry with Tahitian Vanilla Ice Cream.

Activities

You could take it ultra-easy: A long breakfast by the lagoon at The Blue Pineapple. A lazy day by the pool reading a good novel. A bit of snorkeling and sungathering before lunch. An afternoon nap on the chaise on the white sand beach before you take a long, relaxing shower and prep for dinner.

Or you could just take it sorta easy: First breakfast, then jump on Hiro's boat, the Liki Tiki, for the day-long Motu Picnic excursion, stopping along the way to feed and pet some gigantic (but friendly) stingrays. On the motu, you'll eat a freshly prepared barbeque lunch, drink Rum Punch and snorkel before Bruno and his crew bring you back to the Club just in time for an afternoon nap on the chaise on the white sand beach before you take a long, relaxing shower and...well, you get the picture.

These are just two examples but you could also fill your days to the rafters with activities. The lovely people at the Activities Desk can help you arrange just about anything, but the specialties du maison are the Motu Picnic, snorkeling cruises, sunset cruises and Dr. Poole's dolphin watch excursion. They can also make sure you get your deep-sea fishing needs met and can arrange a 4x4 tour of the island's interior, a visit to the Tiki Village, even scuba-diving excursions, bicycles, kayaks and horsebackriding.

The evening entertainment programs are legendary. On Monday nights, there's the Club Bali Hai Crab Races...you haven't really gambled until you've gambled on a quartet of angry, snapping land crabs being egged on by a bunch of bikini and pareo-clad humans. And speaking of pareos, on Tuesday nights, Rosalie (of Club Bali Hai Boutique fame) hosts the Pareo-tying demonstration where she unravels the mystery of the versatile Polynesian wrap. On Wednesday nights, they host a wonderful and authentic Tahitian Dance show featuring a local - and award-winning - troupe. Nothing you experience here on Moorea will connect you with the essence of the Polynesian spirit quite like this show with its traditional and very beautiful costumes, live music and sensual performances.

And then there's "Happy Hour with Muk." The most, colorful of the three Bali Hai Boys, Don "Muk" McCallum, hosts a little BYOB party by the pool six nights a week where, with just a tad of provocation, he'll tell you stories of the early days on Moorea when the three bachelors arrived with the wonderful idea of becoming vanilla farmers...and ended up becoming one of the coolest success stories you've ever heard.

Local Area

The original hotels were conceived by the well known "Bali Hai Boys" who came to Tahiti a few decades ago from California and built their hotels in a style that they imagined was Tahitian. "The Boys," Kelley, Muk and Jay, have always taken a personal interest in their guests and taken great pride in showing them the truest vision of Moorea and the Polynesian spirit.

They started with the Bali Hai Moorea, where the now famous overwater bungalows were conceived and first constructed by Kelley, a transplanted trial lawyer with a vision of something different. These accommodations, now much-copied, are still unique in the world.

Your first morning, you'll wake up to the quiet serenity of island living and look out your window at the gorgeous blue waters of Cook's Bay. When you're ready for breakfast, tie on a pareo and throw on the flip-flops, then just stroll across the lawn and find a seat at The Blue Pineapple...but don't forget to inhale deeply on your way so you can soak up scents of the warm grass beneath your feet and the fragrant flowers all around you in our gorgeous gardens. When you've finished with breakfast, you can lay around the pool, go on one of the many fun excursions offered by the Activities Desk, snorkle off our white sand beach, go shopping in the Boutique or simply return to your room and lay about on your deck or porch. This is your home now and you should relax and enjoy it!

After a hard day at play on Moorea, you'll want to relax on your deck and watch the palms sway in the breeze you while you sip your libation of choice and ponder your choices for dinner and whether you'll have time to stop by and visit Muk by the pool before you go. All that thinking will be taxing, so take it easy and gaze at the sunset while you unwind. Nightime in Moorea is magical, too, so take your time when you stroll back from wherever you went for dinner to listen to all the night sounds and watch the lights from across Cook's Bay twinkling on the water. Another gorgeous morning will come soon enough, so don't rush inside if you don't have to.

John Hogan, the former manager of the Bali Hai Moorea, sums up the Club Bali Hai philosophy: "We are here to see that people have a good time with us. Our kids (the staff) are sincerely interested in that. The Tahitians are a wonderful happy people. These islands are incredibly beautiful. What else do we need?"
