Description

Close to Opunohu Bay on the northeast coast of the island, sheltered from the prevailing winds, the InterContinental Moorea Resort and Spa is located in a spectacular setting between the mountains and lagoon. French architect Pierre-Jean Picart directed a major renovation project that was finished in September 2002.

Check out our slide show from our recent visit.

Dolphin Center

Part of the lagoon in the resort's grounds is the home of the Moorea Dolphin Center (former Dolphin Quest). Here, they've created a huge natural home for four bottlenose dolphins brought from a similar facility in Hawaii or "retired" from the US Navy in San Diego.

They are lovingly cared for by a scientific and veterinary team and are the stars of a fascinating interactive and educational program. You can learn all about these frolicsome creatures, watch them, feed them, swim and play with them in the comfort of small groups.

Accommodations

The 17 Garden Suite Bungalows, the 50 Overwater and 28 Beach Suite Bungalows (also called "fare")--as well as the 48 Garden View Rooms--are all decorated with a concern of combining a respect for the local traditions with non-conspicuous contemporary luxury. Noble woods and natural materials are elegantly used in the decor, including parquet or bamboo, Méranti of Indonesia partitions, mahogany and wicker furniture and natural coloured wall coverings.

The rooms are all provided with a very modern air-conditioning system.

Dining

Fare Nui Restaurant - a gourmet restaurant and terrace that overlooks the resort pool with views out to the beautiful lagoon beyond.

Fare Hana Restaurant - offers continuous service in an informal mood - lighter fare and snacks either inside or alfresco on the pool terrace.

Motu-Iti Bar - the rendezvous place of the hotel, off the lobby and stepping down to the pool. Ideal spot for watching the sun go down over the lagoon as you sip your favourite drink or try a tropical cocktail. Daily presentations of Polynesian cultural arts and live music.

Spa

Tucked away in a discreet coner of the resort is this magical spa, created by Hélène Sillinger, it has been rated one of the world's best by prestigious magazines such as Marie-Claire, Elle, Figaro Magazine and Great Spa Escapes.

It was the brainchild of Hélène who escaped from Paris to immerse herself in the ancestral traditions of Polynesia and create a spa-with-a-difference in the calming ambience of pandanus thatched bungalows, set among the trees and flowers of our gardens.

Hélène insists that her frangipani, hibiscus, jasmine and bougainvillea flowers for the fresh bath are picked daily. Tropical fruits are crushed and grated for each treatment to keep their potency. Only the fresh coconut oil is used and pure spring water is captured from the volcanic heights.

See their spa treatments menu.
