Description

Sailing has a very long tradition in French Polynesia, beginning with the original Polynesians, who navigated as far as New Zealand and Hawaii, perhaps even to South America, in quest of new lands to colonize. Then there were the explorers, Bougainville, Wallis, Cook, and writers and artists like Melville, Maugham, Michener and of course, Paul Gauguin, whose color-saturated canvases became the icon of the Polynesian myth.

In keeping with this revered sailing heritage, the sailing shop Star Flyer will be the first modern-day tall-ship to make its home year-round in French Polynesia, voyaging to the legendary Society Islands and the remote Tuomotus, the home of Polynesian cultural traditions. Star Flyer will offer intensely rewarding personal explorations of islands bearing magical names like Moorea, Bora Bora, Huahine and Rangiroa. Even more noteworthy, as she glides through these pristine archipelagos of unsurpassing loveliness, she will leave no sign of her passaging.

This is a new itinerary for Star Clippers--the first sailing dates are in December 2007. To see itineraries and ports of call, click here.

Accommodations

Like a fine resort, all the amenities are here: double bed or twin beds that can be converted to queen, marble lined bathroom, private safe, television with in-house video, direct dial telephone, hair dryer and comfortable furnishings. The décor is tastefully traditional. You'll find the accoutrements of a luxurious classic yacht, where everything is ingeniously designed for comfort, ease and efficiency.

Burnished brass fittings and mahogany brightwork recall our nautical heritage. Soft natural fabrics reflect the colors of the sun, sea and sky. Prints of famous clipper ships and sailing yachts grace the walls. Everything is immaculately maintained and your steward knows exactly when to appear.

For cabin layouts, click here.

The Owner's Cabin at the ship's stern has a luxurious master bedroom with a marble bathroom, whirlpool bathtub, mini-bar, 24-hour in-cabin service and a sitting area. Measuring a generous 211 square feet, the Owner's Cabin is available when the owner is not on board.

Eight Deluxe Deck Cabins, each measuring 150 square feet, open to the outside deck so passengers can take in plenty of fresh sea air. The cabin has a double bed, which can be converted to two singles, marble bathroom with whirlpool tub and mini-bar.

Twenty-four Large Outside Cabins measure 129 square feet and have a window with ocean view. The Large Outside Cabins have a double bed which can be converted to a single and a marble bathroom.

Forty-six Sea-View Cabins are very roomy by sail ship standards at about 120 square feet. All are dressed in traditional polished dark woods and brass accessories, and most have luxurious double beds which can convert to singles. Marble bathrooms add to the elegance.

Six Inside Double Cabins each measure a comfortable 90 or 115 square feet with upper/lower berth or double beds and have marble bathrooms.

Most accommodations feature television, direct-dial phone, individual thermostat control, private safe, hair dryer, keyless entry, 110 volt (American) outlets and nightly turn-down service.

Dining

Their inspired chefs make dining aboard a delightful culinary adventure, with an international menu of foods from the far corners of the earth.

When you rise, help yourself to a continental breakfast with Parisian croissants, toasted English muffins or sweet Danish pastries, or savor a full breakfast with fresh tropical fruits and crisp bacon, grilled sausage, smoked salmon and omelettes cooked to order in the dining room.

At lunch, a marvellous buffet of seafood, salads and grilled favorites awaits your pleasure. If the day includes a stop at one of the paradisical islands the ship visits, you might also be treated to a succulent outdoor barbecue on shore.

International cuisine

When evening comes, the elegantly appointed dining room becomes the setting for the chef's finest culinary presentations, designed to please the eye and the palate, complimented by a selection of equally fine wines. You'll find the service to be friendly and gracious, as befits a tasteful restaurant.

Activities

On Star Clippers, the day proceeds at your own pace, whatever that may be.

Indeed, the very notion of a rigid agenda of activities is foreign to their cruises. Join the Captain on the always-open bridge as he plots the course for the next landfall. Learn how to splice a line, reef a sail or tie a square knot.

Cool off with a dip in one of the pools, or unwind with a cool drink and your favorite song in the piano bar. Discover history and fascinating cultures on exciting shore excursions in the exotic ports.

If it's a beach day, you can swim, windsurf, water-ski, sail a Sunfish or explore in a Zodiac.

To entertain you at certain ports, they bring local performers on board to give passengers an authentic taste of the local music and arts. So, rather than enduring another Broadway revue, you can enjoy the conviviality of fellow shipmates while a live band plays tropical tunes from a real paradise.

The Captain and crew are superb improvisers of the kind of light-hearted fun you'll only find on Star Clippers. The Captain's daily briefing on deck is wonderfully informative, as well as a chance to hear some great storytelling. There are other events and activities, such as our hilarious crab racing contests, that have evolved from Star Clippers' sailing heritage. In fact, our passengers tell us that it's the easy-going informality of Star Clippers that makes a cruise with us so enjoyable.
