Description

Pine Cay is a secluded 800-acre island, conveniently located just 560 miles southeast of Miami. The only resort on the island, the Meridian Club is beautifully positioned on a two-mile stretch of talcum-powder beach, considered one of the finest in the Caribbean. Soothing trade winds ensure comfortable temperatures and low humidity year round.

The Club is an environmentally sensitive resort, ideal for those seeking an unspoiled retreat. Its 12 rooms and the Sand Dollar Cottage, are set among sand dunes, sea oats and sea grapes, and close to the beach. Some of the privately owned cottages that share the island are also available for rent.

The resort is well known for its excellent cuisine, attentive staff, and "barefoot elegance." Its rooms and cottages, tucked along the shoreline and dunes, all offer panoramic views of the ocean and the island.

The two-story Clubhouse -- with its indoor restaurant, bar, and guest lounge -- overlooks a shimmering pool and the Caribbean Sea. There are outdoor dining areas on the terrace and in a colorful tropical garden, facing the beach with its thatched "shade huts" and sunning chairs.

Guests spend their days relaxing and/or taking advantage of the resort's many extraordinary activities. Options include swimming, biking, sailing, shelling, snorkeling, playing tennis, and swimming in the fresh-water pool. The staff can arrange exceptional bone-fishing and deep-sea fishing, plus excursions to nearby Turks & Caicos islands.

Accommodations

A walkway leads through manicured gardens -- bright with flowering hibiscus, tropical plants, and a Mahoe tree with gorgeous yellow blooms -- to 12 guest rooms in duplexes and quadplexes not far from the Clubhouse. Further along the path, the Sand Dollar Cottage has its own private setting amid the island pines.

Club Guest Rooms

These spacious rooms sit directly on the beach. Each has a large bath and dressing area with indoor and outdoor showers, a separate sitting and sleeping alcove, and private screened porch.

Sand Dollar Cottage

This charming and secluded one-room beachside cottage, designed in a delightful hexagonal shape with a spacious screened-in porch, is the utlimate romantic retreat, partially shaded by graceful Casuarina pines.

Private Cottages

Some of the island's privately owned cottages are also available for weekly rentals, with or without a meal plan. Some overlook the beach, while others have breathtaking island views. These cottages are ideal for couples, families, and those seeking privacy, self-sufficiency, and the private villa experience.

Dining

Days begin for early risers with coffee and freshly baked pastries set out at sunrise on the open-air dining terrace. English breakfasts soon follow with freshly squeezed juices and such Club favorites as omelets, banana pancakes, and coconut waffles. If you prefer, breakfast can be brought to your room. Lunch -- a light buffet of fresh salads and Pine Cay specialties -- is followed by a casual refreshment break in the mid-afternoon.

The highlight of the day is dinner by candlelight, served in the open-air, poolside dining room. The ever-changing menu always features fresh catches from the sea and a broad selection of meat and fowl dishes. Desserts range from Pine Cay lime pie to chocolate terrine with raspberry sauce.

After dinner, drinks and coffee and tea are served upstairs in the lounge, the perfect place for watching the stars and recounting the memories of the day.

Activities

SAILING - Small sailboats are available on the beach. The rental of larger private sailboats may be arranged. The near constant breeze makes for wonderful sailing.

DEEP-SEA FISHING - Experience world-class fishing for sailfish, marlin, wahoo, tuna, dolphin, mackerel and barracuda in the sheltered waters just beyond the national park reef. Have your catch prepared by our chef for dinner as your own personal "catch of the day."

BONEFISHING - Bonefishing on the flats off Pine Cay is excellent and challenging. Whether you are a seasoned expert or a raw beginner, one of our friendly guides will assist you in every way and take you to his favorite spot.

ECO-ADVENTURES - With more than 33% of its land and waters set aside for preservation, The Turks and Caicos Islands is deserving of its slogan “Beautiful by Nature”. Our guests have a wide array of eco-oriented excursions available to them.

SWIMMING - The sea or the pool? It's your choice. Keep an eye out for the dolphin that swims near the shore. Many guests have had the exhilarating experience of swimming with Jojo, a wild dolphin with an affinity for humans.

SNORKELING - Snorkeling trips are organized by the Club almost daily. Masks, fins, and snorkels are available. Since you will be skimming the reef in a national park, we ask you to "take only pictures, kill only time, leave only bubbles." Spear fishing and/or underwater collecting are forbidden by law.

SHELLING - Sand dollars and lovely seashells abound on the beach. Sand Dollar Point, half a mile from the Club, is great for shelling at low tide and early in the morning.

JOGGING - The beach or our golf cart paths make excellent places to run.

TENNIS - Racquets and balls are available at the reception desk at no charge. The midday sun and afternoon tropical breezes make early morning the best time for tennis.

NATURE WALKS - There is a nature trail that, along with a printed guide, teaches you all about the colorful flora and fauna.

BIKING - Explore Pine Cay by peddling your way along the trails and paths which crisscross the island.

READING - An easy favorite. Bring your own books or read those found in our library.

BIRD WATCHING - There are many interesting and colorful migratory and non-migratory birds on the cay.

GOLF - Open to the public, The Provo Golf & Country Club offers a lushly landscaped 18-hole golf course, consistently rated among the top ten in the Caribbean.

MASSAGE - Imagine how relaxed and rejuvenated you'll feel after a skilled massage therapist works your tired muscles.

Scuba

The pastel blue waters surrounding our private island are so extraordinarily beautiful, it is no wonder guests return year after year for what many consider as the premier diving in the world.

Big Blue Unlimited offers genuine small group 1 and 2 tank diving (maximum 8 persons) for all experience levels. Guests can either take the short boat ride (15 minutes) to Big Blue base at the Leeward Marina on Providenciales or private charter a boat to pick them up right on The Meridian Club beach. Dive computers are included and nitrox is available. Big Blue advocates extended bottom times, relaxed surface intervals, flexible profiles and technical diving. Non-divers and snorkelers are welcome, space permitting. Dive destinations are not scheduled but determined daily according to the tides and weather conditions. Private guides are available if divers would like individual guidance or instruction.

THE BOATS

The main dive boat is a fast, new 40ft “Bellecraft Marine” power catamaran. It is comfortable and spacious with a cabin, table/seating, marine head and bunks. All safety equipment is on board the boat including Emergency Oxygen, VHF and first aid. All staff have medical and rescue skills training. Luxurious 27ft and 30ft power catamarans are also available for snorkelling and private charters.

DESTINATIONS

The diving off Pine Cay is a 15 minute boat ride from Providenciales or just 5 minutes from The Meridian Club. This area is a little deeper than Grace Bay and is characterised less by sand and more by large undulating coral hills. Eagles Rays, lobster and large crabs are common here. It is an excellent area to dive offering high water clarity.

Grace Bay in front of the main north shore is the closest dive destination to Provo. The depth starts at 30 feet and drops over the mini wall to 100 feet. The area is characterised by spur and groove formation and provides some excellent and easy diving. Grace Bay is located within the Princess Alexandra National Park and as such is vibrant and healthy. The condition of the water is often governed by the tidal currents and the weather patterns in the Atlantic Ocean to the north.

North West Point is famous for its steep walls. Starting at 40 feet in the sand it does indeed drop off several thousand feet into the blue. There is an incredible amount of life on the walls which is also marked by several gulleys, cracks and overhangs. It is worth bringing a flashlight on this dive.

French Cay is among the best diving in the Turks and Caicos and is a favourite destination for Big Blue. The diving is more advanced here with potential currents, heavy seas and deeper water below the boat. The sea life is outstanding with a high chance of encountering reef sharks and eagle rays. The top and sides of the walls host an estimated 80% coral cover and support large amounts of fish life and other invertebrates.

West Caicos also offers some of the best diving in the Islands. Stretching along its leeward shore there is an outstanding wall that starts at 50 feet and disappears into the abyss. Here too there is a good opportunity to see eagle rays, reef sharks and other large pelagics. You can also step inland for a look at the old salt raking and sisal settlement known as Yankee Town.

Awards

Pine Cay is one of the featured locations in Caribbean Travel & Life's January/February 2005 Ultimate Beaches issue, which highlights 50 of the very best beaches in the Caribbean.

Local Area

Since there are no automobiles, televisions, radios and ringing telephones at the Meridian Club, you are left to enjoy the island's natural beauty and tranquillity. The surrounding waters (which average a pleasant 75 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit) teem with marine life. For divers and snorkelers, underwater visibility often exceeds 100 feet, and there are miles of coral gardens within easy reach. Ashore, Pine Cay remains a pristine natural haven, dotted with palmettos, pines and seven freshwater ponds, the perfect habitat for abundant local fauna and flora.

Some say that Columbus refilled his water barrels from Pine Cay's freshwater ponds during his quest for the New World. In the centuries that followed, countless mariners and marauders no doubt did the same. Yet despite Pine Cay's location on an ancient, much-navigated trade route, its only permanent settlement seems to have been an Arawak Indian village dated at around 800 A.D. Then, in the late 1960s, a scholar-turned-dreamer set out to create an island escape, which eventually became the Meridian Club, Ltd. Today, the Club and a small group of private homeowners are dedicated to preserving the island in its peaceful, natural state.
