Martinique Vacations Overview

Help on using features on this page

As an overseas territory of France, the island of Martinique is straight French Caribbean, with 450,000 French-speaking inhabitants and the use of the Euro currency. Tourists from North America and Europe commonly arrive via plane into Fort-de-France, the capital and largest city on the island.

Martinique is famous for its active volcanic interior. Hiking opportunities are plentiful. The highest point on the island, Mount Pelee, last erupted in 1902 and destroyed the nearby city of Saint Pierre, killing 30,000 residents. Windsurfing and yaching are popular water-based activities.

As a result of its European influences, a wide variety of cuisines are available on the island, catering to many different tastes. Not unsurprisingly, French and French-inspired dishes are usually excellent.
